Hello everyone!  I'm Craig from Berea KY and I've been working with Joomla on a very limited basis for a little over a year, and I've been helped quite a bit by Barrie's book.  Looking forward to learning with you all!

Hi I'm Cynthia. I'm a graphic designer living in Central Vermont. I have a strong background in print design and studied web design years ago when tables were all the rage. I spend about 10 years working in Publishing and started my business, Cynthia Ryan: Graphic Communication a little over a year ago. Business is good and everyone wants CMS sites, so I've been busily trying to get my Jooomla skills up to par with the desires of my clients. I've built a few Joomla sites, but want to get this really under my my belt and hope Joomla U will help me do just that. I was also fortunate enough to be in a web marketing class with Barrie last Spring in which I learned quite a bit. I would really like to eventually see material available on Joomla U about implementing VirtueMart and on developing custom templates. In the meanwhile I will delve into the material that's already here. Thanks so much Barrie and Forest.

Hello Everyone,

It was great to read all your posts and read about experience with Joomla.  My name is Sarah and I live in Ireland. I think Joomla is fantastic.  I have Barrie's book, but for me, Joomla needs to be learned 'hands on'.  Some of the concepts are best described via video tutorial and I'm hoping to do that at Joomlashack University.  Having access to experts who can help me figure out problems that take me hours scouring forms was the clincher for me :-)  I'm looking forward to the intermediate/advanced tutorials.

I'm just finishing my first Joomla site, but I've built it on localhost/hard drive. One thing I need to know how to do soon is how to transfer the data to a webhost. Do I export the database? If so, how?

Hello - My name is Aaron and I am in the Chicago area. I have a side business developing websites. I was trying to start the business for several years but found coding in html and javascript was much too time consuming for a side business. I started exploring different CMS applications and I stumbled across Joomla. I found it to be the perfect solution as far as time constraints but at the same time giving you the ability to edit code to give you design flexibility as well as the number of great extensions available. This year I have created and manage 12 sites for different clients all using Joomla. I am always looking for different ways of doing things and seeing other peoples input and ideas so I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to learn some more.

I am very glad that I enrolled in this course and I am sure i will learn a lot during this course. I hope I can also learn all the advance stuffs in Joomla including advance user access levels, e commerce, social networking and membership websites, the back end MVC programming and learning about how to customize a Joomla website to meet my client's needs.

I also would like to learn how to do things in the best way that makes more sense and easier for maintenance at a later time.

It is very nice to learning with you all:)

Hi everyone,
My name is Kathy and I'm relatively close geographically to Joomlashack's home.  I'm enjoying reading what countries/states everyone is from.  I have worked with Joomla for 3 yrs, currently managing 10 sites, so why am I here you might ask?  Because I learned the hard way - spending way too much time in forums for simple answers, and still sometimes I wonder if I'm doing things the best way.  I'm familiar with the excellent teaching style of Barrie's and expect that I'll pick up valuable information even in the beginner's course.  I also want to evaluate the course for members in our Joomla User Group here in NH (http://joomlanh.org/).  I look forward to the intermediate and advanced courses.  Will custom templates be part of the course as well?
Thanks for this excellent learning opportunity, Barrie and Forest.

Hi, I am Karen Henchy from Warwick, RI.  I am a beginner in Joomla and have taken one course that started in June 09 in which I learned a lot.  After taking the course, I developed a site for the school that I work at and have gotten Barry's book (first edition) which helped me a great deal, I also have used many of Barry's tutorials on Joomlashack.  I really love working with Joomla and just want to learn as much as I can to help. I am hoping to develop a site for my work as a painting teacher as well!  As soon as I heard about Joomlashack University, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it! I am so glad to be here to learn among the experts!

Barrie,

I know we don't know each other very well, but in our brief acquaintance, I have come to realize that you rock, and this course is going to help me a great deal.

Thanks so much for the tip about the Penhelion tutorials.

Cheers,

I am Marie from Philadelphia, PA. I have developed 3 sites (one a paying customer) using Joomla. I started with Joomla about 4 years ago when I wanted to develop a site for a small non-profit. I first used MS Frontpage (no groaning please) as I was  newbie to web site development.  I kept peppering my computer guru son (and professional IT dude who hate all produst that start with MS) with questions on how to do something. Finally he got feed up with having to answer questions about anything MS and suggested I try Joomla as he had been playing with it and would be more than willing to help me with that. I also got Barrie's books (1st and 2nd editions-- had to upgrade from 1.0 to 1.5), cruised all the Joomla forums and was able to get the site up. But not easily or as well as I would have liked.

I have use d Joomlashack templates on all the sites and have been pleased with the response when I asked some pretty basic questions early on. 3 sites later, I feel comfortable in the basics, but have been looking for a couple years for a course that would take me step by step through the process so I can learn a better way and faster way without me having to travel or pay huge amounts of money up front.

Added benefit for me is the community of a variety of people with many different skills, from many different countries, with a shared interest. Looking forward to our Joomla journey together

Hi Sarah Jane Smiley

It's been coming up in a couple different places so far that some members want to know how to restore the backups that we show you how to make with joomlapack.

This is one easy way to move a site from one server to another.

We'll soon be creating a video that shows how to do this and adding it to the beginner's course.

Once you get the hang of it, using Joomlapack to move your site from one server to another (such as from your localhost to a remote host) takes only a few minutes. Lickety split. Just like that.

cheers,
Forest

Hi! My name is Pam Marin-Kingsley. I am a small press publisher and graphic designer. I have designed some basic Joomla sites and added content, but I am looking to finesse my skills and improve.  I have two book imprints: DarkHart Press and Raven's Wing Books. Hi all!  My name is Diane Brunsting and I've been using Joomla for several years now.  I work for a college and we are migrating our sites to Joomla as we speak.  We are already running our athletics department, capital campaign, student life and admissions on Joomla and are hoping to launch our main site early next year.  I also do work for our church and grade school and we are running Joomla there as well.  The church site I am planning on migrating over next summer to 1.5 as we are still on 1.015. I'm pleased to say we were chosen as the Catholic website of the month last year from American Catholic web.  Currently, that version is meeting our needs but I am hoping to add more functionality so this course will be helpful.

I've attended a Joomla expo in Chicago where I was pleased to sit in on Barrie's sessions and keynote speeches.  He was very kind to asnwer questions I had after the session which was quite helpful.  I use his books, site and blogs as the Joomla! bible. I'm looking forward to seeing him again in May at the CMS Expo in Chitown again!

I'm Kathy and I am a freelance graphic and web designer with my own business (very small).   I used to be a software developer, but wanted to do more front-end work (I designed and wrote middleware and back-end processes).

I have just completed my first joomla! site, but wanted to make sure I had a good foundation before tackling more.   I found it relatively easy to do, although I'm new to php (my languages were java and c++), but I need to develop some depth and experience.

I've created one template and an extension for joomla (couldn't find an existing one, so wrote one myself).

Thanks for providing an in-depth course-- I can't wait to get started!

Hi - My name is Kevin and I work as a "Web Administrator" for a government agency and do very limited freelance stuff --

Skillset is pretty limited, as the job currently does not demand much else.  I have had to teach myself what I know and I come from a non-technical background.

I am trying to get ahead by expanding beyond what we currently use (no CMS) and have decided to pursue some knowledge here -

I'd like to soak up as much as possible --- but will no doubt be asking basic questions to start.  Have read some of two books I purchased on Joomla, but feel I need an interactive place to make it all click.

I am very happy to be "here"

Hey All,

My name is Yuval, from New Jersey, and I also signed up for Joomla University today.  I have Barrie's book and all the Packt ones and they've been great so far. But I find myself going slow at the template and front facing parts of the game. Having browsed around, I figured the courses here are just what were needed.  Once I'm up to par with how things work, I'll be happy to throw my experiences up in the forums and elsewhere.

Good luck to all in getting what they need from this coursework!

Hi, I just signed up today, too.  I'm Tammy and I do homeopathy and web design on an island off Vancouver.  I've done some simple sites and I'm interested in doing larger community sites for groups such as the Canadian Society of Homeopaths, etc.  Also, I have some potential clients interested in online product sales and I would really like to learn how to implement Paypal, Virtuemart, Verisign, etc.  I would love to take Aaron's course in Vancouver, but this online course means I won't have to take the ferry !
