Greetings everyone,
Carl from about an hour outside of Philly here. Small design and maintenance shop over the past decade.
I took on a client this year and they need a different approach, and from what I have seen and worked with thus far Joomla could very well fit the bill quite nicely. So I'm here to learn the system and hopefully have a new tool set to branch into a new market.
Take care all, and looking forward to learning and doing new things.
Carl

My name is Lorne VanSinclair, I live in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. I have a small home business building web sites. I started fooling around with Joomla a few weeks ago and I think I have a basic grasp but CMS is the only way to go and I want to be really good at it. I trust Joomla University will help me achieve that goal much faster than doing it on my own.

Hi all!
My name is Laura Schwarz and I live in South Burlington, Vermont. Was a web designer in my previous life (before kids) and of course all the technology I had down pat eight years ago is beyond extinct. Have been needing to get my husband's wine shop web site looking presentable for two years now. It currently has a horrible Joomla template. I'm hoping to be able to install new templates and modules so the site functions and looks like a real business.
Have a great day!

Hi Barry,
I'm Torben, my prof. job is vice president of CareCom A/S, and on the side I run a small consultancy working with clinical decision support systems. I want to build a website for this consultancy, and this is why I am here. I have created a website (Joomla 1.5), applied one of the free templates, but I still need help learning the basics, and later the more advanced stuff. Having paid my dues, I am keen to get started and hope for some real interesting training in the Joomla University.

Hi All,
My name is Roy Purlan and I live in Cornwall on the South West Coast of the United Kingdom. I run a small Guest House and am starting a web design business. I love working with computers and using software (not computer games) and I am really looking forward to becoming a Joomla! expert!!!
I stumbled across Joomla! a few months ago, liked what I saw, bought the book and really enjoyed working through it. I am at the stage where I want to start producing websites so thought I would consolidate what I have learned so far and get some real depth of knowledge.
Looking forward to the course.................

Hi Shackers!
My name is Karl and I run a small computer services and repair business in the U.K. I did a number of websites a few years ago and have recently got back in to it all again. With things having changed quite a bit in recent years I thought I needed to brush up on my knowlwedge. I discovered and began working with Joomla about 2 months ago, got Barrie's book, got going on some sites. When the first round of the University opened I was only just starting out with Joomla and never considered it - but although now I feel quite comfortable with it all, I realise I'm only scratching the surface of Joomla and have now enrolled to discover how to make the most of it.........

I've been working with an international non-profit organization, HCJB Global (
www.hcjbglobal.org
), for the past 3+ years as the IT/Web Manager for the Asia Pacific region and have recently added the responsibilities of Web Server Systems Administrator which lands me in the lap of needing to know the inner workings of the 19 (at current count) Joomla! sites we have in production.
I am Canadian.
Born and raised in Abbotsford, BC and lived in the Prairies for 10 years. The last 3+ years, I, with my wife and two kids, have been living in Singapore - and loving it! (
thebalzers.blogspot.com
)
I've been dabbling a little with Joomla! and now it's time to dig in. I am specifically interested in learning how to best configure Joomla! and its extensions with respects to security, performance, and maintainability.
Happy learning to all!

Hi
My name is Peter and I'm from Johannesburg, South Africa. I read Barrie's book which really helped me getting my first site going. When I heard about the University I didn't hesitate.

Hi everyone. My name is Tony and I live in the southwestern US. Work full-time and am also a full-time student majoring in Technical Communication (emphasis in computer science) with dual minors in History and Philosophy.
I was introduced to Joomla! several years back when I did my TC internship at one of the departments at the university; the head of the department had looked at Joomla! to replace their current web presence that used a database hacked together by previous students (the joys of student help at the college - bright kids, no common sense and no documentation). I ended up setting up and configuring Joomla! (1.0) on the Microsoft server. Welcome to the wonderful world of content-management systems!
Have Joomla! (1.5) on my Macs, use MAMP to get the local webserver running so I can play with Joomla! Looking forward over the upcoming break to play with SiteGrinder (Photoshop plugin used to create websites from Photoshop Layer Comps) and see how well it can integrate with Joomla! Salesman said it would, but then he was a salesman.
Looking forward to learning more about and gaining more experience with Joomla!, esp. designing templates.
Tony

Hi Everyone!
My name is Regina and I am so excited about this University. I've been trying to learn Joomla for years. I've attempted many times. In fact, I just learned how to properly install Joomla on a server. But as a Graphic Designer...that is not enough. I want to learn how to manipulate existing templates or even create new templates based on my own designs.
I have a non-profit client that wishes to use Joomla for their website and I think they should, I just couldn't get past the install step!!!
Let's do this!
Regina

Hi all,
My name is Kevin, and I'm in the Dominican Republic where my wife and I run a small business. Very comfortable with computers and business type apps, but an absolute newbie with web design. I started playing with Joomla about 4 months ago, gave up and did a website using Google sites. It got me up and running painlessly, but it's nothing like what we want or need, and I committed to coming back and learning to use Joomla. Saw the Joomlashack University opportunity and here we go!
Exciting to think there is so much knowledge available from my fellow students, never mind the course leaders!

Hi from Australia
I've been making websites since the Mosaic browser
A client asked me to rework their website so they could 'do it themselves'. A two year journey later ...
A soon-to-be-expert Joomla! (when I'm finished this course
) web designer was born.

Hi Everyone,
My name is David and I live in Dallas, Texas. This course seems to be exactly what I have been looking for!
I have worked with Joomla in the past and have found it to be a wonderful CMS, but like many of you my desire is to master Joomla.
I am looking forward to the journey ahead!

Hello, my name is Brian, I live in southeastern Connecticut. I have volunteered to help with the Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress' website (
www.ctdownsyndrome.org
), which has been created using Joomla! 1.0 We are currently trying to convert the website to 1.5 and I am looking for all the help that I can get. I have 'tinkered' with web design for many many years and am somewhat used to the 'normal' way of doing things. Content Management Systems are totally new to me and I look forward to learning all that I can about Joomla!
Regards,
Brian

Hi Brian,
We have it on our near-term roadmap to create a video lesson on how to migrate from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5.
In the meantime, you can read this thread for a little more information on the process:
http://www.joomlashack.com/community/index.php/topic,15124.0.html
Best wishes,
Forest

Hi Jeff,
we'll definitely do a lesson on that.
1.6 stable hasn't been released yet...still lots of "wet cement."
There will be a migration tool created, but to my knowledge it hasn't been created yet.
The development of 1.6 has to come to a certain point for the migration script to be created, and they aren't there yet, at least as far as I'm aware.
We're all hoping that it will be much simpler than the upgrade from 1.0 to 1.5 ;-)
cheers,
Forest

I am a newbe to Joomla and have tried to get up and running on my own. I have designed many websites (mostly intranet) using various tools from notepad to Cold Fusion and WYSIWYG editors. Currently, I am revamping a static website I designed for my Realtor wife and would like to do it in Joomla. From there, who knows?

Hi,
My name is Thierry, I am Dutch but have been living in Southern Spain for a few years now. I started using Joomla (in combination with Jomres) when creating
www.tarifatime.com
, my online holiday apartment rental business. Since then I have made several other websites using Joomla, mainly for friends and relatives. I am excited about joining Joomlashack Uni to improve my self taught (the hard way
) skills and learn new things. My goal is to become proficient enough to work freelance as a web designer.

Hello there
My name is Eric. I live in sunny Brisbane, Australia. I am a dutchie and moved to Australia a few years ago. Recently I finished my first Joomla/VirtueMart website (for my wife's jewellery business). It was quite a struggle and most of what I did was via the trial and error method. Although I did learn something, I thought it would be a lot more efficient if I really know what I am doing.
So here I am.... ready to start this university.
Cheers,
Eric

Hey All, I am Tim from New York and I have owned my company for over 11 years now. My first crack at joomla was on my own site
www.precisionwebtech.com
. Since most sites are a work in progress I am really looking forward to this class to hone some skills. Look forward to everything!
Thanks!

Hi, I'm Dale. I'm another Canuck up in the Vancouver area; and I'm a Joomla! newbie.
I've started up a small, hobby related business, and with a lot of self taught "book learnin'" I've managed to get a rudimentary site up and running. Which, considering that when I entered grade school we still used chalk and slate boards (I kid you not), I think it's not too bad a start. However, teaching myself from books and forums is taking me more time than I'd like, and it's really not all that efficient. I've joined the U to hopefully get my learning on a faster, and more focused track.
I ended up with Joomla! for a couple of reasons - open source being the first - but what kept me going was the sense of commitment that Joomla! users seem to have; not just to the product, but to each other as well. It's a community that I think I'd like to become a part of, and I'll enjoy watching the progress that we'll all be making here. Also, like some of you have already mentioned, I'll be hoping for some kind of ecommerce pointers as well.
Good luck in your studies!
