What really helped is giving the parameters detail.  I'm still pretty new and I keep finding things to learn!

I am considering Joomla, and your Education template, for a pre-school. Following your tutorial example -- I would set up a section for "Classes" and categories for each separate class. What would you recommend if the administrator wants the parents to be able to see ONLY the category that represents their child's class -- and be blocked from seeing other class "categories" if they do not have a child in that class?

@John

That kind of permission control is not possible with default Joomla. You would have to install a major ACL component like JBAM.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I suspected -- but I thought I'd ask anyway!

Thanks, Barrie.  This was a very helpful tutorial and I learned a lot. One section I would add would be one on how to change the logo. I eventually found the answer in the forum, but it would have been nice to have it here.  Smiley

Hi Barrie,

I purchased your ebook (JoomlaAdminManual-V13.pdf )which includes the chapter about Creating A School Website. Most IT books include a website or CD with the files used in their tutorials. Why do I have to spend more for the template files for this chapter?

You don't. There's a free school template on this page....
http://www.joomlashack.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=171&Itemid=43

Given that this is a site selling commercial temapltes, you'd kinda expect that if you want more than the free ones on offer, they're going to charge you  Wink

Is it possible to apply this tutorial to other themes? I really like the tutorial but I'm not too enthusiastic about the theme, I'd like something like my blog www.ainhoavega.com but with three columns like the Education theme. Any suggestions?

Absolutely...I'm using it with another template. Barry has written a great generic chapter and just uses the template from here as an example. You may not get the exact same layout, but it's a great guide as to the types of tools to use in a school environment.

Hi Barrie,
Congratulations for excellent job! There is Polish saying - do not open the opened door... Instead of reinventing many things I have everything in one file. But... I decided to wait for Joomla 1.5. To my best knowledge your new book  Joomla! a User's Guide: A User's Guide Paperback: 384 pages Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR; 1 edition (December 21, 2007) Language: English ISBN-10: 0136135609 ISBN-13: 978-0136135609 will be about version 1.5. What about perForms, DOCMan, ReMOSitory. To my best knowledge they are available only for version 1.0.x.

And after posting that, I thought I'd follow it up with this (just gone live)....
http://www.pnins.school.nz/

That site doesn't use a Joomlashack template but the structure, layout and many of the tools were inspired by Barrie's chapter and the ideas suggested.

Great work!
I was however confused a lot by the mention that this chapter was an excerpt from your upcoming book on Joomla 1.5.
In fact, comparing it to your current eBook on Joomla Admin (which I just purchased)
which deals with version 1.0, il seems clear to me that this sample chapter (with its numerous typos) is in fact a draft of the corresponding chapter in your eBook, and does NOT deal at all with Joomla 1.5. The screen shots are quite clear about that.
I think this should be mentionned alongside the download link, to save others from the confusion I went into.

Does that mean that your upcoming Joomla book will include a rewrite of this chapter to adapt it to version 1.5 ?

Regards

The free chapter here is for 1.0.

The chapter has been upgraded for 1.5 (and typos fixed Smiley) and ithat version is part of the (to be) published book for Joomla 1.5.

Hope that helps....
