Most template tutorials give you a few pointers in where to place modules, or maybe how to set up a piece of content on the home page.

Ours is different.

Written by the popular Joomla tutorial author, Barrie North , its a huge 30 page guide entitled Creating a School Website with Joomla, part of the upcoming book, Joomla 1.5: A User's Guide.

You can download it now free right here (you must be logged in to download the PDF).

Joomlashack has decided to not create a 1.5 version of the Shackpack. However, you can get a similar hosted version from simplweb:
www.simplweb.com/schools

You can get a 1.5 version of the template from here:
http://www.compassdesigns.net/downloads/file/133-js_education_15.html

I've only just downloaded the manual - looking forward to reading it.

fyi, I had to use IE7 to get it, Firefox 2, my preferred browser, wouldn't work whatever I tried  Sad

Good luck with the project - I'm looking forward to looking through the schools forum - and contributing of course!

You were obviously logged in to write your post, therefore if you scroll up to the first post by Barry, you will see the PDF file to download.

I can't promise anything, but I'll try to find time to do this. I think this would be a great exercise to keep/improve my Spanish.

¿Y Luis puedes corrigir mi grammatica?

I´ll retract that offer as the PDF has save as text, copy & paste disabled. Also the copyright is Prentice Hall , Attribution-Non Commercial-No Deriivatives.

So althougth this is an excellent text and it's nice to download, the community can't help out with translations.

How funny is this.  For years I've been force to manage the site of the department of the Uni I work for by way of a Unix shell.  I've cried blood  Cry requesting some sort of CMS.  They recently approved that the site can live on another server, and the admin for this server is OK with me running Joomla!.   Everything was falling in to place, and now this!!  BOOM!  I'm gonna go out and by a lottery ticket.

This is EXACTLY what schools need. This is similar to the idea here in PA called http://www.SchoolWires.com but that is based on ASP and IIS and cost $$$$$. Our school uses a CMS system called DFS and it cost $20,000.00/yr. We could really use Joomla to manage the school's site. Thanks for the e-book, I will be building a demo site for practice.

Its a sample chapter from my upcoming book, no-derivatives just means you have to ask first Smiley.

I am more than happy for people to translate the document, but I would ask that we have them available here as a central resource location for people....

This is great, and comes at a great time as I was getting ready to implement a Joomla site for a small christian school (currently at www.cbcnh.org/cca) and was in search of a good template for it.  Having the documentation and extra components is going to make this a LOT easier since I have only a little website experience and very little Joomla experience.

After just starting to read this chapter, I am surprised at the HUGE number of typo's.  Is someone collecting editing input?

Thanks all!

I have tried to download this manual. I am logged in and am using IE7. I have tried to open and save. After I have downloaded and I try to open (either after downloading or just trying to open) I get the message the file is either an invalid format or corrupt. I would appreciate any assistance available.

Hello,

I just confirmed that the file downloads and opens, using both IE7 and FF2.

I am not sure why it's not working for you peeps who are having troubles.

Are you using the most recent version of Acrobat Reader?  Perhaps that's the problem??

Sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you....  I just cannot replicate the problem, and I can't find a solution to a problem I can't replicate...  Undecided

peace,

Umm, I feel stupid saying this, but when I first went to download the PDF, I accidentally clicked on the link at the top of the message which was actually the one for the thread (I guess), rather than the link to the attachment at the bottom, that looks something like this, and worked fine for me:

            Creating-school-website-with-Joomla.pdf (1507.52 KB - downloaded 769 times.)

Of course, I am using Netscape 7.1, because that happens to be my preference.

If you were clicking on the wrong link like me, don't feel bad -- we're all human you know!

Barry

We are going into a proposal for a local school district here in the states. I have briefly scanned over your document and your thinking and direction is similar to ours for the school district. We know going into the proposal they are thinking different.

Could we possible reference your document and also would you considering coming on board in some type of consulting capacity.

Please advise
Thank you

What is the error you are receiving?

There are a few ways to make sure PDFs open correctly...I'll go over a few.

  • Make sure your using the newest version (yes it matters as each PDF is compatible with how it is made, encryption is with newer versions which would show a file corrupt error in older versions)
  • If upgrading completely uninstall Adobe, reboot (IMPORTANT), then reinstall the new version (Reader tends to not overwrite old files correctly)
  • Clear your browsers Cache file to open up room for their web plugin (If this is full will sometimes say "File is Corrupt")
  • If all else fails right click the link and select Save Target As. This will let you bypass any web plug ins that could be corrupt (this will fix 99% of the 0 byte problems your receiving)
  • If you still have an error let me know, I've dealt with PDFs for years

Also on a side note I've just started reading this document, should start a side forum for typos as suggested in an earlier post Wink
