SEO and the page title order in Joomla
«
on:
January 06, 2007, 07:34:06 AM »
Hi to everyone,
Should it be better to exchange element in PAGE TITLE?
Example:
NOW page title is
NAME OF MY WEBSITE - TITLE OF MY PAGE - I.e. Joomla Italian Community - Name of my page.
Shouldn't it better to write:
Name of my page - Name of my Web Site?
If you put in page title the main keywords, google will give more attention to the keyword rather than to the web site brand.
Best Regards
Giubertinik

You are absolutely right here.
Its currently thought that a search engine will only look at the first X characters of a page title (no-one knows how many). So, this would mean that you would want your page title before you site title.
There are actually several ways to address this:
1. Use a hack, there is one detailed somewhere on
http://forum.joomla.org
. Hacking is generally never a good idea though.
2. Have VERY few keywords for you site, like 3. The disadvantage here is that trying to rank your homepage will be difficult.
3. Have a different template on your home page. Hard code your title tag into this on and then another (almost identical) template on the rest of the site with the normal Joomla head include. THEN you have NO title in you global config. Now your home page title can be carefully crafted and your interior pages will have a title dynamically generated by Joomla based on the article.

Interesting post.
I read a post a while back that relates to this and did some digging around to find it:
http://www.seomoz.org/blogdetail.php?ID=1562
Basically these SEO guys are still debating which is best - Site Title or Page title first

I think this guy had it right:
Quote
For some it makes sense to push their BRAND and for some it doesn't. If the question is in what's better for search engines ... we know that having the keyword go first is better (because it's SEO/technology). If the question is what's better for the site "business wise" there is no "general" answer. It depends on what the site is trying to accomplish.
Are you really trying to create a brand or monetize from searches. I would think very very few Joomla sites have the visibility that its worth working on their branding.

http://www.joomlatwork.com/
Has an excellent SEO addon for Joomla
I got the paid one (thier is a free one as well)
And i use it on ALL my joomla sites.
It should be part of the joomla core.
I allows you to make you own title tag for every page, especially the home page
here are a few of its features
The SEF patch extended version offers the following additional functionality which is not available within the free patch:
* Additional field to put in the HTML title field, separated different from the page title and page header.
Add 5 custom META tag fields to the Joomla content and menu items;
The ability to control the settings of the title field (for example if you want to include the site name within each title it's now possible)
The ability to add the META title field into the html head section
Better control over the standard META fields: robots, keywords and description
Control over the Google Cache setting (this allows you to prevent that your documents can be retrieved from the Google Cache)
Control over the Google snippet settings (this allow you to prevent that Google can show a summary at the search results)
The ability to dissallow Google to index images on your search for the images search
The ability to display the Joomla meta generator tag (if you like this)
Now support static pages
* When no title is available the sitename can be used as the default title.
The ability to set http-equiv settings of the documents dates: Last modified settings of document and expires settings for the http cache
The ability to assign META data to any Joomla URL: thereby supporting third party components with GOOD titles and META data
* Keywords and multi keyword phrase suggestions for Joomla URL's when you assign META data to URLs.

As i've said, I am new to this.. and that is a very interesting bit of advice.
Thanks.

I like to have my page titles in front of the sitename, because I want my major keywords to show in the title tags.
I also like to target different targets in my keywords, as long as they are related.
There is a simple way to find out in Google how your pages and the titles (which make up for a great deal in being found in Google) show up in the search.
Just search on
site:http://www.example.com
(replace with your domain name).
The comment on the post of SEOMOZ mentioned before brings more perspective.
Do you want to rank well on keywords, or are you working on creating a brand?
Once you made that decision choose your option....
My decision? title :-), but thats me..

I agree with everyone - it is up to you as to want you want to achieve.
Without a doubt for the past 8-9 years the most important thing you can do for seo is using the right page titles, which is the only thing that joomla seriously lets us down on.
Personally, I believe that search phrases at the beginning of the title is the most important. The brand name can always be last, because in many cases it will be unique anyway.
I am going to test JPromoter although it concerns me that they do not appear to be using it on their own site (
http://joomlaequipment.com/content/view/4/19/
) - this one claims does not conflict with any SEF or meta generation components
The other I have just purchased for testing is Joomla SEO patch extended version (
http://www.joomlatwork.com/products/components/sef_patch_extended.html
) - this one is different because it overwrites some core joomla files. Means for each installation you have do a reinstall of the software after a joomla upgrade - painful I think

thanks for the review.
Does it do anything else other than what's in your review?
or is that basically it?

There is some more thing that is worth mentioning. It does automatic title reversing on every page.
NAME OF MY WEBSITE - TITLE OF MY PAGE revers to TITLE OF MY PAGE - NAME OF MY WEBSITE
Yet it shows keywords from the page one is currently editing. That is extremely useful for those who still believe in Keywords usefulness.
Yet it shows double content and this functionality is needed with no doubt. Then one can mark to NOINDEX all similar pages and left only one. Later there will be 301 to main page of double content group.
One more thing.
http://www.diva-foto.dk/component/option,com_gallery2/Itemid,13/?g2_controller=exif.SwitchDetailMode&g2_mode=detailed&g2_return=%2Fcomponent%2Foption%2Ccom_gallery2%2FItemid%2C13%2F%3Fg2_itemId%3D800%26g2_ion%3Dcom_gallery2%26g2_mid%3D13%26&&g2_returnName
This is 404 error page and that was fond with JPromoter.
You see it is more useful then you think. It has crawler which act more like SE and can find and show you interesting things. You can find out about your site something you did not even thought.

Yes, from my extensive reading, the concensus view appears to be that there is a "rule of leftness" (and a "rule of topness") for titles, descriptions, page content ie things near the start tend to be given greater weight. It's certainly been my experience and since we made these adjustments on our own site, we've seen ranking improvements (with no backlink changes during that period)....so to me, that would appear to confirm it.
I posted a hack on joomla.org a while back about hacking your 1.0.x code to give you full title control (not just reversing the page title - sitename order) which can be found here
http://www.salsainternet.com.au/joomla-seo-page-title-uses-title-alias.html
. There are much nicer, more packaged solutions (joomlatwork is one that many have recommended) and ARTIO SEF does this now in the latest version.....but if you just want a quick tweak, then the link above might help.
