RIP, Joomla 1.0. As announced last October by the Joomla Project, the original version of Joomla is now officially "unsupported" and will no longer receive any security updates or bug fixes.
The day that Joomla 1.0 officially retired was July 22nd, but we were reminded of the news by a blog post on the Joomla Project's "Leadership Blog" late last week written by Sam Moffatt.
Some interesting numbers about Joomla 1.0:
- First released on Friday, September 16, 2005 as "Baby Joomla"
- At least 1.6 million downloads (and probably a lot more)
- Last update released in February 2008- 17 months without any security improvements
- At one point believed to be more popular than Britney Spears, but that was proven wrong. (Interestingly, Joomla does appear to have caught up with Britney recently.)
If your site is still on Joomla 1.0 and you don't have a team of developers laying about to keep it secure and healthy, you'd best get on Joomla 1.5 asap. Need help? Migration resources are here.

As announced on the official Joomla Project Developers Blog a few weeks ago, Joomla 1.0 is headed into the sunset next July.
Longtime Joomla volunteer Wilco Jansen writes:
But now it's time to say our farewells to our old friend Joomla 1.0. As
of July 22, 2009, the Joomla 1.0.x series will no longer be supported.
As a user, is it required that you upgrade from Joomla 1.0.x?
Absolutely not since security upgrades will be supported until this
date.
But if you're a user who hasn't yet upgraded to Joomla 1.5, you
should do so in order to start reaping the benefits the latest version
has to offer. If you're a developer in that small minority who hasn't
yet become Joomla 1.5 native, this is your last call to join the
majority of developers who have already discovered the power and ease
of the Joomla 1.5 series.
Joomlashack's Barrie North offers some useful tips on Joomla 1.0 to Joomla 1.5 migration over at our sister site, Compass Designs.

If you haven't caught Joomla 1.5 fever yet, and are planning on keeping your Joomla 1.0.X website for a while longer, there's important news for you on the Joomla Project website.
According to the news item from joomla.org,
This version has been triggered by reported cross site scripting problems that could occur under the right circumstances. We have also addressed many other general bugs and problems as well.
This release addresses serious security vulnerabilities and you should proceed with testing on a backup copy of your site. Once you have verified that your site works as expected, we recommend upgrade your live site as soon as possible.
So there you have it... upgrade your site as soon as possible. Will do! But how? Learn more about upgrading.
