Joomlashack is always excited to keep on top of the latest Joomla 1.6 news on our blog. Last week big news was announced by the volunteer developers over at the Joomla Project: the next generation of Joomla is expected to be released very soon, or in the words of Development Coordinator Andrew Eddie, "on or about 22 June, 2009." Eddie blogged last week about some cool new features of Joomla 1.6, and posted some annotated screenshots of the revamped Menu Manager. From what we can gather through the various channels and sources, Joomla 1.6 is expected to have lots of new functionality and many usability improvements. And what about Joomla 1.5? Our friend Jen Kramer McKibben reports that the current version of Joomla is expected to be "supported" for three years, which means from its January 2008 release date until early 2011. She blogs: Normally one might expect that as Joomla! 1.6 is released, Joomla! 1.5 support will become limited. (For example, Joomla! 1.0 support ends on July 22, 2009, and extension support for Joomla! 1.0 has been decreasing for some time.) However, this is not going to be the case. Joomla 1.5 will
remain the “stable”, production environment for Joomla!. The 1.6
branch will be seen as quick-moving and somewhat experimental, as the
core development team adds new, badly needed functionalities (better
permissions system, multiple categories, and tags among them). As those
technologies mature in the 1.6 branch, they might port some of the
functionality back to 1.5. Read her full post over at Lynda.com. So with all this information flying around about Jooomla 1.6, what is a Joomlahead to do to keep informed? Stay tuned to our blog, of course. But for the direct source and breaking news, Eddie recommends following the Twitter search term #joomla16. One might also keep an eye on the Joomla Community blog as well. What are your hopes and dreams for Joomla 1.6? Comment below and let us know! The next generation of Joomla is coming.
