Jumpstart to Becoming a Blogging Pro

Video on building a blog with Joomla

If you have never blogged a day in your life, or you aren’t seeing the results you want with it, maybe you should take a step back and look at how you’ve been blogging.

Don’t be sad, it’s probably not YOUR writing. However, it may be HOW you are writing

So what do I exactly mean by this?

It might not be the subject you are writing about, or your grammar and word choices. It might be the way you structure your writing and how you present it to you audience.

First thing’s first

Learn from other blogging veterans out there. You can set up an RSS reader with blogs you enjoy reading as well as other top blogs in your industry. For example, I love reading HubSpot, Social Media Examiner, and Moz’s blogs.

When you check out other blogs, you will see how the blogging experts are formatting their blogs and how they are writing with their voice.

Hook’em like a fish!

If you start out your blog with a boring paragraph, why would the reader want to continue reading? Even if you have awesome content below, your first few paragraphs give an idea of what the rest of your style will be like.

Not sure how to hook them?

A great tip for hooking your reader is to add in your personality. If you are a sarcastic, energetic or whatever awesome characteristic you possess, use it to your advantage! You don’t have to treat your blog like you would a school research paper. Nope! Blogging is all about having fun and interacting with people. Treat your blog writing like how you would talk to a  friend.

Intro

Introduce what you will be talking about right away because people will want to know what they should expect from the rest of the article. If you don’t clue them in early enough, chance are they won’t dig around to find out.

Along with introducing the topic, let the reader know how it will help them. This can be done just by simply saying what problems the topic will help the reader solve due to the information within the article.

Body

Instead of making the reader think they are reading a novel, break your blog into smaller sections. These smaller sections should only include a few sentences in them (ditch the idea that a paragraph has to be 5-7 sentences). Also, all of these smaller sections should be grouped with a topic title to keep things organized.

Use bullet points to organize your blog further and to make it easier on the eyes. A solid body of text can be daunting so bullet points make your blog look less “scary.”

Title

Now that you have completed your blog post and it’s looking pretty reader-friendly, you may want to take a stab at your blog title. Follow the title tips below:

Attention grabbing

  • Clearly describes the blog’s topic
  • Create a sense of urgency
  • Use numbers (preferably more than 7) or how-tos
  • Use captivating words: Awesome, remarkable, witty (you get the point)

Picture

Don’t forget to add a bit more life to your blog with a cool picture. The picture should reflect what the blog post will be about. It doesn’t have to be a literal depiction of your post, but it shouldn’t be a random picture either.

I hope you found this blog post helpful if you are just starting out blogging and didn’t know where to start. Just keep practicing and you will get the hang of it in no time!
