When you install Joomla, you install the default English (UK) language for your website.
Joomla will use that language for both the frontend (public website) and the administrator (backend).
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to install another language pack and make it the default language for your Joomla site.
Step #1. Install a new language
A new Joomla installation includes only the language selected during setup. Before you can switch to another language, you need to install its language pack.
To install a new language:
- Go to System > Manage > Languages.

- Click Install Languages.

- Select the language you want to install.
- Click Install.

Wait for the installation to complete. The new language will then be available for both the frontend and administrator.
Step #2. Change the default frontend language
The frontend is the public-facing part of your Joomla website.
- Go to System > Manage > Languages.
- Select the Site tab.
- Click the Set Default icon next to the language you want to make the default.

Your site's frontend will now use the new default language.
Step #3. Change the default administrator language
The administrator (backend) is where you manage your Joomla website.
- Select the Administrator tab.
- Click the Set Default icon next to the language you want to make the default.

The Joomla administrator interface will now use the new default language.
