Thanks for using Joomla and Joomlashack. For the second time, we're doing a round-up of news from around the Joomla community. Please let us know if you find this useful and want more round-ups in the future.
Here's our guide to what's interesting in Joomla right now. I try to post one of these helpful items every day in the Joomlashack Facebook group, so join if you do want daily Joomla updates.
Use Google Maps overlays in Joomla
Shack Locations Pro is the best way to create a location-based directory in Joomla. Version 1.5 is available now with a really cool new improvement. You can now highlight areas of a map with graphic overlays. This is possible with Google's "My Maps" service. Click to see how to use map overlays in Joomla.
Joomla 4 will ship with Bootstrap 5
I accidentally caused some arguments as a result of last month's newsletter! I said that Joomla 4 would include Bootstrap 5 but no 100% official, final decision had been made. Now it has! The Joomla team wrote a detailed overview of their thinking. Read about the decision to use Bootstrap 5.
Video introduction to custom fields
A few people in the Joomlashack Facebook group have asked about custom fields and learning to use them. You can't do better than Marc Dechèvre's video intro to custom fields for Joomla Australia. Marc also wrote a text guide if you prefer that. Watch Marc's introduction to custom fields
57 free Joomla overrides to download
Daniel Dubois has created 57 overrides that you can download and use on your site. These include latest news, testimonials, pricing tables and much more. It's a really cool resource to quickly set some advanced layouts. Daniel also has a guide for importing to your site. Download the free Joomla overrides
Sustainable web design in Joomla
Waseem and Johan from Joomlatools have been involved in climate change issues for many years. They wrote about their work to reduce the carbon footprint of their site. They think they've built the fastest and most sustainable Joomla site on the planet! Read Johan and Waseem on sustainable web design
Catch up on the Joomla team's work
If you want one place to see what's happening with Joomla, I'd recommend the reports from Llewellyn Van der Merwe. It's a quick recap of everything from Joomla 4 progress to the security, documentation and Google Summer of Code teams. Very helpful! Read Llewyn's report on the Joomla team's work
Customize the welcome emails from Joomla
There was a great discussion on the Joomlashack Facebook group about customizing the welcome emails sent to users after their accounts are created. There were suggesting including AcyMailing, Registration HTML Email, and Email Beautifier. See the discussion on customizing welcome emails.
Use Ecwid for simple shopping carts
If you need a simple, reliable shopping cart for Joomla sites, you don't always need an extension. OSTraining has a new guide to using Ecwid as an embedded store: Watch the video on using Ecwid with Joomla.
